Sounds or Surrounds?
Skaters like music and some like it in their ears when they roll and others like to hear what is happening around them..
Personally I can't skate, I don't land as much stuff, with buds in my ears... I know guys who can't land squat without their tunes in their ears..
So, I put it to you SLAM, to do a feature, with Australian skaters, sponsored or pro or whatever, but of the same skill level, about Sounds or Surrounds. What they prefer, why they prefer it, how they react if forced to skate other than how they prefer (like if their Ipod was broken, or if they are at a park with music getting played that they don't like) What would happen if they were made to skate to Classical, Jazz, Harcore Punk, EDM? Mix it up, confuse them sonically and see how it effects their skating.. Call it a sound study.
Take it a step further.. set up a series of obstacles that each of a selected group have to skate.. set an easy trick, like a 50-50 on a low ledge. How many attempts does it take them to land it when skating the way they like to skate (with or without music) Now mix it up, give them someone elses ipod and get them to try the same trick, how many attempts, is it smoother or sketchier? Now give them Barry Mantilow and see if they land anything at all..
See where I am going with this?
Comparing individuls would be unfair.. it might take one skater only one shot and another 5, even when skating in ideal conditions.. But compare the results to the skater..
example
djsm lands a kickflip after 2 attempts while skating without earphones or music (preferred).
djsm lands a kickflip after 5 attempts while skating with earphones, and listening to his favourite band.
djsm lands a kickflip after 28 attempts while skating with earphones, and listening to Pink.
djsm doesn't land a kickflip with a car horn sounding every 3 seconds.
And do that for a number of skaters, personally I think that would be interesting.. and I think the results might be interesting too.. obviously there would be planning and testing and all that the work out a viable way of executing such a study... but once you work out control environments and stuff, you could get really creative with the situations..
Make Dustin Dollin listen to The Sound of Music soundtrack and try those mad front shuvs he does.... actually, make any skater and see what happens LOL..
